This question gets asked a lot in photography forums. Some people may object, but the answer is a most definite NO.
One fantastic example is Alex Majoli. Alex is a professional photographer for Magnum Photos and he takes photography with a compact camera for National Geographic too. He has also won multiple prestigious awards including, U.S. National Press Photographers Association’s Best of Photojournalism Magazine Photographer of the Year.
In this article about Alex Majoli, you can see some of his impressive works taken with a point-and-shoot compact camera. Furthermore, the article is written in 2005 and compact cameras have since evolved tremendously.
Even though Photography7.com provides more articles related to DSLRs, our tips and articles can and should be applied to compact consumer cameras too. That being said, it is only fair to mention that DSLR do give the photographer much more control on Depth of Field, shutter speed and more.
Why do I use DSLR? Because I’m a gadget freak. That’s why. What camera are you using to take photos? Please share with us in the comments!
