Post Processing Tip: Straighten your horizons!

August 4th, 2007 by Os

One of the best tip I’ve found so far is to straighten the horizons in my images. What does that mean? Have a look at the this image, taken from a recent trip to Hong Kong:

Star Ferry - Original Small

Notice anything wrong with it? (Other than the fact that its crappy)

One thing that is wrong with picture is that the horizon is a diagonal. The picture just does not feel right to me. Here maybe it’ll be more obvious once I highlighted the horizon:

Star Ferry - Highlighted Small

See the red horizon line? By using Photoshop or any other similar image editing tools, you can easily rotate and straighten the horizon. After straightening the horizon, cropping the picture and brightening the colors, here is what it looks like now:

After a little touch up, it looks a lot better. (To me at the least!) If you change it to Black and White and crop it a little more, you’ll get Photography7’s very own banner!

There are many techniques to get the horizon right. Some techniques suggest post processing if the picture is taken in a hurry. While other techniques suggest to get the horizon right while capturing the image.
